The Wayfarer’s Path is more than just a hiking trail in the Como Mountains. It is a journey through time, a route that follows ancient communication routes used since Roman times. Far from mass tourism, this itinerary, which runs along the Lecco side of the lake, allows you to experience the area in an authentic way, in contact with nature and history.
The trail, in its best known section, starts from Abbadia Lariana and reaches Colico, for a total of about 49 km. A route of medium difficulty, suitable for anyone with a minimum of training, and which can be covered in several stages, usually 4 or 5, depending on one’s pace and available time.
The Wayfarer’s Path stops: a modular itinerary
One of the most appreciable features of this trail is its flexibility. There are eight official stages, with two variants, but they can easily be combined or divided according to one’s needs. This makes it an ideal route for both experienced hikers and those who want a more relaxing walk.
Here is an idea of the main stages, which can be modulated to create your own personalised The Wayfarer’s Path itinerary.
First stop: Lecco – Abbadia Lariana
Recently inaugurated, this stage runs along the slopes of Mount Coltiglione, offering a panoramic view of Lecco and Mount Barro. The original route started from the small church of San Martino in the municipality of Abbadia Lariana, but recently the Lecco – Abbadia section was restored and inaugurated, starting from Le Caviate in Lecco. We recommend you walk it at dawn to fully enjoy the beauty of the landscape.
Second stop: Abbadia Lariana – Lierna
This section starts at the Church of San Martino and passes through several villages, including Mandello del Lario, where you can admire the small Romanesque Church of San Giorgio. In Maggiana, the Torre del Barbarossa, a medieval tower that dominates the landscape, awaits you. Along the path you will cross meadows, woods and olive groves, discovering suggestive views of the lake.
Third stop: Lierna – Varenna
Considered one of the most challenging, this stage is also one of the most fascinating. In Lierna, the map of The Wayfarer’s Path offers you two options to choose from: the low variant, which runs along the lake; and the high variant, which climbs up to the San Pietro plains. The latter offers breathtaking views, but requires more physical effort. Along the route, you will come across the Croce di Brentalone, a viewpoint equipped with tables where you could organise a pleasant picnic, and the Alpe di Mezzedo, with its iconic bench with a view, perfect for taking a few photos in the beautiful setting of Lake Como.
Fourth stop: Varenna – Dervio
This stage is easier and very scenic; the trail here winds through open meadows, wooded areas and ancient mule tracks, offering enchanting views of the lake. It starts in Varenna, one of the most beautiful villages on the lake, and continues to Bellano, where you can admire the Castle of Vezio and Fiumelatte with its fresh spring and bubbling waters.
Fifth stop: Dervio – Colico
A continuous up and down between lakeshore and mountain characterises this fifth stage of the trail. In Dervio, you can visit the medieval village of Corenno Plinio, with its castle and the church of St Thomas of Canterbury. The route continues towards Colico, offering a panoramic view of the Bay of Piona. The stage ends at the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Valpozzo in Piantedo.
Where to sleep on The Wayfarer’s Path
Along the way of the wayfarer, there is no lack of opportunities to rest and refresh oneself. There are numerous accommodations near the trekking trails in Colico, Abbadia Lariana, and in the other localities touched by the trail. You can find hotels, B&Bs and agriturismi, for every need and budget, perhaps discovering authentic treasures of local hospitality, equipped with the right comfort to relax after the walk.
